Keto mozzarella sticks are one of my favorite quick and easy low carb snacks to make! They're cheesy on the inside, and crispy on the outside. And when you pair them with a rich and tangy low carb marinara sauce, they are heaven on earth. Seriously, this is THE BEST keto mozzarella sticks recipe you'll try, and each stick literally has less than 1g NET CARBS!
The Best Keto Mozzarella Sticks
These little flavor bombs of stretchy mozzarella cheese would make a fantastic low carb appetizer, snack, or side dish.
They’re perfectly seasoned and perfectly breaded.
And of course, you can’t forget all that delicious cheesiness.
Best of all, they’re so incredibly easy to make!
The whole recipe will only take you about 20 minutes.
That’s like no time at all!
I highly recommend serving these keto mozzarella sticks as an appetizer or side dish for something really meaty like this quick keto chili recipe, or this totally delicious low carb meatloaf.
But also, these are insanely delicious on their own and would make the BEST keto snack by themselves too.
Just don’t forget the marinara sauce!
Which, by the way, this one is a fantastic keto option. It's the one I use on my keto mozzarella sticks.
Low Carb Mozzarella Sticks
Usually, cheese sticks recipes – like mozzarella sticks – are full of carbs because of all that breading that goes on them. And that is you definitely want to avoid if you're doing a low carb keto diet.
But since almost nobody can resist the gooey cheesiness in mozzarella sticks, I decided to make a low carb & keto-friendly version.
And let me tell you, these honestly turned out fantastic!
Like, we're talking highly, HIGHLY, addicting cheese stick deliciousness here.
Plus, each one only has 0.75g NET CARBS.
These low carb cheese sticks can be baked or cooked in the air fryer. Both methods yield a deliciously crisp breading outside and a stretchy & cheesy inside.
I go into more detail on how to do both ways a little later on.
Also, one of the best things about these keto mozzarella sticks is that you can keep them in the freezer for months!
They hold up really well so you can keep a stash of these as a keto snack idea and take one out anytime you’re craving that ooey-gooey cheesiness.
Keto Marinara Sauce
Now, most marinara sauces aren’t that keto-friendly.
They’re usually packed full of sugar and are super rich in carbs.
So you’re gonna want to be careful when choosing what marinara sauce to dip your keto mozzarella sticks in.
Personally, I use RAO’s keto-friendly pizza sauce as my go-to marinara sauce.
It’s super flavorful & tangy but also low carb. Each serving only has 2g NET CARBS, which is the lowest I’ve found so far for any pizza sauce or marinara sauce.
Also, if you’re looking for another cheesy and tangy recipe featuring tomato sauce, I highly recommend my keto meatballs recipe on my blog.
You can add a cup of mozzarella cheese to the recipe and really bring the cheesiness up a few notches.
How to Make Mozzarella Sticks For Keto (Video)
So, how do you make super satisfying & delicious keto mozzarella sticks?
Here’s my secret: Triple coat the cheese.
Seriously, coating the mozzarella cheese in layers of perfectly seasoned keto breading is what makes these low carb keto snacks so full of flavor.
Plus, that thick and even coating makes them look SO good. This is definitely the perfect appetizer or side dish to bring out when you have friends over.
Step-By-Step Instructions
First, you’ll want two bowls – one with egg wash and one with our keto breading.
The Egg Wash
The "egg wash" is just 3 large eggs beaten together until the yolks combine with the whites.
The Breading
As far as the breading goes, it's a mix of crushed pork rinds, almond flour, onion powder, garlic powder, grated parmesan cheese – yup; it gets even cheesier! – and Italian seasoning.
As always, remember to never substitute almond flour with coconut flour. Almond flour is one of the BEST keto flours because of its texture and low amount of carbs.
But coconut flour is totally different.
It won’t give you the texture you want, and it will leave your cheese sticks tasting like coconut. Plus, your keto mozzarella sticks will be dry AF.
Seriously, do not substitute them for one another.
For an almond flour substitute, I highly recommend either sunflower seed flour or walnut flour. Both are excellent choices, in my opinion.
Another secret to this breading is the crushed pork rinds. These are what adds that awesome crunch to the breading and also contributes a ton to the flavor.
To make the crushed pork rinds, simply place about ¾ cup of your favorite pork rinds in a ziplock bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
You’ll want to crush them really finely, so this is a great time to release any pent up frustration or anger you might have! It’s a keto recipe and a therapy session.
The Cheese
Then, you’ll want to cut 6 sticks of mozzarella cheese in half to make 12 smaller cheese sticks.
And, as I said, you’ll want to TRIPLE coat these in the egg wash and breading.
Keto Mozzarella Sticks In The Oven
Finally, you bake them at 400°F for around 10 minutes.
That’s it! In about 20 minutes – or 15 if you’re super fast with prep work – you have one of the BEST keto snacks ready for dipping in some low carb marinara sauce.
Keto Mozzarella Sticks in the Air fryer
If you want to bite into these ooey-gooey & cheesy mozzarella sticks ASAP, you can actually make these faster in the air fryer.
In the air fryer, these will take around 5-6 minutes to reach for the cheese to reach that perfect, melty & stretchy consistency that makes mozzarella sticks so good.
Making them this way will help you make these cheese sticks in record time.
So, to make them this way, follow the same process of making the breading and coating the mozzarella as we discussed earlier.
Then, instead of putting them in the oven, set the air fryer to 380°F and cook for 5-6 minutes.
You’ll want to check up on these every now and then to make sure they don’t overcook.
That said, once the melty cheese is just starting to pop out from underneath the breading, they’re done.
And of course, when you finish making them, serve them hot.
And make sure to pull apart the mozzarella sticks to see that glorious cheese pull.

Hi Joe thanks for another brilliant recipe. I have one question: could I substitute the ground pork rinds with something else?
Leanne says
Joe, I was wondering do you think this recipe will work as well if I cut up a block of mozzarella into sticks of similar size? I don’t want to try it and end up with a sheet pan of melted mozzarella with coating mixed in. Also I was wondering if different flavours of cheese sticks would work like cheddar cheese or mozzarella with jalapeño peppers?
Victoria says
Can you please tell me if I should use the powder Parmesan cheese from the can or do I grate my own cheese?
Thank you so much! I would like to make these tomorrow 😋
