THE BEST INSTANT POT OATMEAL
Now I don't know about you, but I think oatmeal is one of the best ways to start your day. Nothing beats waking up to a warm bowl of freshly cooked oatmeal filled with all of your favorite toppings.
And if you don't like using the microwave and think making oatmeal on the stove takes too much time and effort, you'll love this Instant Pot oatmeal. The oats are perfectly cooked every time, tender and creamy with just the right amount of chew.
Oh, and the best part is - everything is ready in 15 minutes or less! And making it requires zero effort, so you can do some morning tasks while you're waiting for it to cook.
Plus, to really take the oatmeal's deliciousness over the edge, I included instructions for making a honey-sweetened cream cheese topping with berries and pecans.
Seriously, once you've had a taste of this oatmeal in the Instant Pot, you'll wonder why you never made it this way before!
INGREDIENTS
Aside from the fact that this Instant Pot Oatmeal is so quick and easy to make, it also has an incredibly simple ingredients list. All you need is rolled oats - a.k.a. old fashioned oats - and a couple of pantry staples.
And if you want to finish your oats with the recommended toppings, most of what you need should already be in the fridge - or just a quick grocery store trip away!
Anyway, here's what you'll need to make the oatmeal:
- 1 ¾ cups rolled oats
- 2 cups almond milk or regular milk
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
And for the optional topping:
- ½ cup cream cheese
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Blueberry
- Strawberry
- Red currant
- Pecan nuts
So, the topping is optional, but it's so easy to add on, and I think it's by far the best topping combo ever created for oatmeal.
But if you want something a little simpler, you can add in some of this Sugar Free Maple Syrup for a tasty, healthy breakfast!
HOW TO MAKE OATMEAL IN AN INSTANT POT
As I mentioned, it only takes 15 minutes to make this oatmeal Instant Pot style. And the entire time is hands-off time cooking.
So, let's get right to it and make some oatmeal!
STEP 1: COOKING THE OATMEAL
First, put the rolled oats in the Instant Pot and add the cinnamon and sea salt. Then pour in the almond milk (or any milk you want) and close the lid.
Next, select the oatmeal setting on your Instant Pot. It'll automatically cook the oatmeal for about 5 minutes.
Once the cooking time is done, let the oatmeal sit covered for another 5 minutes to let the oats fully soak up the rest of the milk.
After that, quick release the steam before opening the lid, stir the oatmeal well and transfer it to a bowl.
OPTIONAL STEP 2: ADDING YOUR TOPPINGS
Now you can serve your oatmeal plain, finish it with your favorite mix-ins, or top it with a combination of honey-sweetened cream cheese and fresh fruits.
To make the suggested topping, mix the cream cheese with a tablespoon of honey in a bowl.
Then, drizzle it over the cooked oatmeal and add the blueberries, strawberries, red currants, and pecans.
Finally, grab a spoon and dig in!
HOW TO STORE COOKED OATMEAL
Ok, so this recipe makes about 3 servings of oatmeal. But if you're making it for the whole family, you can always adjust the measurements for a bigger group.
But if you're just making it for yourself, it's perfect for cooking once then having breakfast all prepared for the next few days!
To store the oatmeal, transfer it to an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for about 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
If you're storing a particularly big batch, I recommend dividing them up into portion-sized containers so you can just reheat the amount you need.
HOW TO REHEAT COOKED OATMEAL
To reheat the cooked oatmeal, place it in a saucepan and heat on low for about 10 minutes with occasional stirring. If it's looking a little dry, you can add a splash of milk to make it creamier.
You can also heat the oatmeal up in the microwave. To do that, place the oatmeal in a microwave-safe bowl with a tablespoon or two of milk. Heat it up for 30 seconds, then stir it and check if it's warmed up enough. If it hasn't, warm it up in 30-second increments, stirring after each one, until you've reached your desired temperature.
If you're starting with frozen oatmeal, you'll want to transfer the oatmeal from the freezer to the fridge first and let it thaw overnight before reheating it.
FAQS ABOUT THIS INSTANT POT OATMEAL RECIPE
CAN I USE STEEL CUT OATS FOR THIS RECIPE?
Absolutely. This recipe also works for steel cut oats, just take note that they're naturally firmer and chewier than rolled oats when cooked. Great if you like your oatmeal to have a lot of texture!
HOW DO I USE THE OATMEAL BUTTON ON MY INSTANT POT?
Using the oatmeal button is as easy as selecting it. If your Instant Pot doesn't have an oatmeal button but has a porridge button, you can also use that.
WHAT IF MY INSTANT POT DOESN'T HAVE AN OATMEAL BUTTON?
If you're using a pressure cooker with no oatmeal function, you can use the manual/pressure cook setting and set it to cook on high for 3 minutes. Don't forget to let it sit for 5 minutes once the cooking time is up.
