MY TAKE ON LOW CALORIE GRANOLA
If you thought being on a low calorie diet meant having to say goodbye to granola, this recipe is going to change your mind.
With less than 100 calories per serving, this healthy granola recipe tastes anything but low calorie. In fact, it rivals any store bought granola out there, and comes with way less sugar.
Plus, as I mentioned just a second ago, making it from scratch couldn't be easier. Just a few simple steps are all you have to follow to whip it up.
Best of all, though, is the fact that I don't just love it, but my entire family loves it too. Yep, even my kids.
It's especially a favorite of theirs on lazy Sunday mornings alongside some yogurt and fresh fruit.
Plus, as I just mentioned, making this granola recipe is a breeze. You literally just whisk the egg whites until frothy, then fold in the rest of the ingredients. Pour everything onto a baking sheet, and the oven takes over from there!
Yes, it's actually that simple.

Joe Tip (kind of like "pro tip", but better): Experiment with a variety of add-ons to enhance the flavors of your granola. I like to mix it up by adding dried cherries, pumpkin seeds, or chia seeds for an extra boost of nutrients.
INGREDIENTS
The good news about this granola recipe is that you only need a few pantry staples to make it. In fact, I'm willing to bet you have most of them on hand already.
Anyway, here's what you'll need to make it:
- 2 large egg whites
- 4 tablespoon desired sweetener (I used allulose)
- 2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 ¾ cup brown rice cereal
- 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats (use gluten free oats if needed)
Pretty simple, right?
If you're not concerned with a few extra calories, you can use maple syrup or brown sugar as your sweetener of choice. And as for the spices, I prefer plain cinnamon, but you can use pumpkin pie spice for even more flavor.
By the way, save your egg yolks and use them to make my low-carb peanut butter cookies. It's another easy sugar free recipe that makes chewy, decadent cookies!
HOW TO MAKE LOW CALORIE GRANOLA
Now that we've gone over the ingredients, it's time to make some granola!
And again, this recipe couldn't be simpler. All you have to do is whisk the egg whites together, then fold in the other ingredients and transfer them to your baking sheet. The oven does most of the hard work, so you only have to be in the kitchen for 5 minutes.
With that said, let's stop wasting time and get to it!
STEP 1: WHISK THE EGG WHITES
First things first, start by preheating the oven to 325°F (163°C), then line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
Then, whisk the egg whites until they're frothy and less translucent. Once they're whisked, carefully fold in the sweetener.
STEP 2: COMBINE THE INGREDIENTS
Once you've whipped the egg whites, whisk in the cinnamon, brown rice cereal, and oats. Stir to combine, then spread the granola over the parchment paper in an even layer.
STEP 3: BAKE
Last but not least, it's time to bake the granola! Start by baking the granola for 20 minutes. Then, use a spatula to break the large clusters. Continue baking the granola for 10 minutes and gently stir again. Finally, return the granola to the oven and bake for another 7-8 minutes or until the granola mixture is golden brown and crispy.
If you're planning on using the granola right away, you can use it on whatever you like. If you're planning on storing it for another day, let it cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container.
Once the granola has cooled, I like to fold in additional mix-ins, like freeze dried fruit, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, shredded coconut flakes, or chocolate chips. But of course, you can add whatever you want to your low calorie granola!
Anyway, once the granola is crispy and crunchy, it's ready to enjoy!
HOW TO STORE LOW CALORIE GRANOLA
This recipe for low calorie granola makes 6 servings, so it's perfect for a big family breakfast. However, since the leftovers store really well, it's worth it to make a double or triple batch so you can have it whenever you need it!
Speaking of leftovers, if you end up with any, simply place them in an airtight container and store at room temperature for up to 1-2 weeks.
You can also freeze extra granola in a freezer bag for up to 6 months if you want to keep it for longer.
FAQS ABOUT THIS LOW CALORIE GRANOLA RECIPE
IS GRANOLA HEALTHY FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
Yes! When enjoyed in moderation, granola can be a healthy addition to a weight loss diet. That said, I highly recommend making this homemade granola recipe instead of buying store-bought granola since the store-bought stuff often times has a ton of unnecessary added amounts of sugar and calories.
CAN I USE SOMETHING OTHER THAN EGG WHITES?
Yes, if you'd rather skip the egg whites, you can use coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil, but keep in mind both of those options will add substantially more fat and calories.
