The Best Dill Sauce For Salmon

This fresh, tangy, and deliciously creamy dill sauce for salmon is an absolute game changer at the dinner table. It's a dipping sauce that's just so creamy and it's packed with a ton of bright and savory flavors. Plus, it practically goes great with everything.

For real though, you'll want to keep a container of this addictive dill sauce in your fridge at all times!

Thankfully though, if you ever run out, it takes practically no time to whip up another batch. In fact, you can have the creamy dill sauce with lemon juice on the table in just 5 minutes - and all it takes is a few simple ingredients to do so.

For what it's worth, this creamy dill sauce is amazing with pretty much every fresh salmon recipe, like baked salmon, grilled salmon, roasted salmon, smoked salmon, blackened salmon, and air fryer salmon bites. But it also goes great on things like pan seared halibut, roasted potatoes, and roasted kohlrabi.

    Ingredients

Again, the ingredients you'll need to make this lemon dill sauce are all simple and easy to find. In fact, you probably have most - if not all - of them at home already.

Anyway, here are all of the ingredients you'll need to make this sauce for salmon recipe:

    • ½ cup Yogurt
    • ½ cup Mayonnaise
    • ½ Lemon juice
    • 2 tbsp. Shallots, minced
    • 1 tsp. Garlic Powder
    • 1 tbsp. Horseradish
    • 1 tsp. Dill
    • Salt and Pepper

    Simple stuff, right?!

Dill sauce ingredients: small bowls of mayonnaise, yogurt, and lemon wedges; tiny bowls of chopped dill, minced shallots, garlic powder, lemon juice, and horseradish. At the bottom is a plate of asparagus and broccolini.

    Ingredient Substitutions and Suggestions

While I recommend making this creamy dill sauce with the ingredients listed above, I do have suggestions for making some substitutions to them if you're in a pinch.

Now, if you're using dried dill - instead of fresh - you'll want to use only ⅓ teaspoon of it. Dried dill typically has a much more intense dill flavor than the fresh kind - as is the case with most herbs - and it might overpower the whole sauce if you use too much. That's why I always recommend starting out with a little less, and then adding more if needed.

As for the yogurt, I highly recommend using full fat Greek yogurt for this recipe if you can. It's deliciously rich and creamy, and it's perfect for making this sauce as delicious as possible. With that said though, if you don't have yogurt, you can use sour cream in a pinch.

Lastly, both fresh or prepared horseradish can work in this recipe. But, if you need a good horseradish substitute, wasabi works wonders. Take note that it'll change the color of the final sauce slightly, but it'll still have the same tasty zing.

How to Make Dill Sauce for Salmon

Again, this dill sauce is pretty simple to make as far as sauce recipes go. There's no heat or cooking involved, just some minimal ingredient prep and mixing.

All in all, this recipe should only take about 5 minutes at the most!

Now, let's get into the steps for how to make dill sauce for salmon.

    Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

First, start by portioning out the ingredients. Then, mince the shallots, grate the horseradish, and juice the lemon.

Also, just keep in mind that if you're using fresh dill you'll want to remove the thick stems before finely chopping the dill leaves.

A bowl with unmixed dill sauce ingredients: yogurt, mayonnaise, garlic powder, horseradish, minced shallots, lemon juice, and chopped dill.

Step 2: Mix the Sauce ingredients

Now, combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix until everything is well incorporated. Then, when that's looking good, give the dill sauce a taste, and adjust the seasonings as needed.

Once the dill sauce is ready, serve it alongside your favorite salmon recipe or anything else you want, and enjoy!

    How to Store Dill Sauce

Now, just so you know, this recipe for dill sauce will make about 1 cup. So, if you want to make more, just double or triple the recipe!

Also, this lusciously creamy sauce stores really well, so don't be afraid of making too much of it. And, speaking of storing it, you can store your fresh dill sauce in an airtight container - or resealable jar - in the fridge for about 1-2 weeks.

Honestly, I think the grilled salmon dill sauce tastes even better leftover since the flavors all have time to develop and meld together in the fridge.

FAQs About This Dill Sauce Recipe

Dill sauce is naturally the best sauce for salmon. The tanginess of the lemon, the creaminess of the yogurt - or sour cream - and the aromatics of the dill just pair perfectly with the flaky butteriness of cooked salmon.
