The Best Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls

There's nothing better than freshly baked cinnamon rolls. Atleast I don't think there is.

And if you thought it was hard to make cinnamon rolls gluten free, this recipe has you covered. This recipe is truly as easy as it gets when it comes to making cinnamon rolls from scratch. All you need is some common baking ingredients to make them, and the process is effortless too.

Plus, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how good these are. They're light, fluffy, perfectly chewy, and just pillow soft.

    Gah, they're so tasty, tasty!

So, you better believe the results of these pillowy soft gluten free cinnamon rolls will have you dreaming about them tonight.

Honestly, I'd put them right at the top of my most delicious gluten free recipes, along with these chocolate chip cookies.

    Ingredients

As I've mentioned, this recipe is one you can make out of pretty much all pantry staples. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if you already have almost all of them in your kitchen!

Here's what you'll need to make this gluten free cinnamon roll recipe:

    • Just Under 4 ⅓ Cup (600g) Gluten Free All-Purpose Flour
    • 1 Tbsp. Sugar
    • 4g Dry Yeast
    • 1 Egg Yolk
    • 1 Tsp. Sea Salt
    • Just Over 1 Cup (270ml) Warm Water

    For the filling:

    • Just Over 6 Tbsp. (90g) Butter, Room Temperature
    • ½ Cup (60g) White Sugar
    • 3 Tbsp. (40g) Brown Sugar
    • 3-4 Tsp. Cinnamon

    And to top them off:

    • ½ Cup (120g) Crème Fraîche or Cream
    • ¼ Cup (20g) Powdered Sugar

Pretty standard stuff for the most part, eh?

The only not-so-common ingredients are maybe the dry yeast and créme fraîche. But both of these are easily available at most/all grocery stores.

By the way, while I do think the créme fraîche makes the best glaze for these gluten free cinnamon rolls, you can always use regular milk or even plant-based milk in it's place.

A bowl of flour, small white bowl of egg yolk, small white bowl of sugar, a small plate of yeast, and a small spoon with salt on it all on a gray counter.

How to Make Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls

So, it may seem like a lot of steps upfront, but don't be intimidated! I promise they're really easy and so worth it in the end for the cinnamony sweetness.

Now, gather your ingredients together, and let's bake some cinnamon rolls!

    Step 1: Making the dough

First, take out a large mixing bowl, add the gluten free flour, sugar, and dry yeast to it, and mix them until combined.

Next, dissolve the salt in the warm water and half of the amount of water - ½ cup - to the large bowl of dry ingredients. Then add in the egg yolk and mix everything to combine.

A bowl with flour, sugar, a girl, and water in it with a wooden spoon submerged in the bowl. Behind it is an empty cup of water in an empty white bowl that had the egg yolk in it all on a gray counter.

    Step 2: Kneading the dough

Now you can either add the dough to a food processor and mix knead it in there, or you can knead it by hand for about 8 minutes. However, if you're going to knead it by hand, make sure to transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface before you start.

Anyway, once the dough has been kneaded appropriately, you can put it back in the mixing bowl, and lightly add the rest of the water until the dough separates from the bowl.

Then, when that happens, cover the bowl with a kitchen cloth and let it rest in a warm place for at least 45 minutes.

Step 3: Making the cinnamon rolls

Once the dough has doubled in size, transfer it to a lightly floured surface and roll it out into a thin rectangle about 1 centimeter thick.

Now it's time for the best part, filling the dough!

First, coat the surface of the rolled-out dough with some softened butter.

Then mix the sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl and sprinkle this mixture evenly over the entire dough.

Next, starting with the long end, roll the dough slowly to form a strudel shape.

    Step 4: Baking

Now cut the rolled dough into about 8 cinnamon rolls, lightly grease a baking dish with butter, and arrange the cinnamon rolls in the dish.

Then, let the dough rest for about 10-15 minutes, and preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

After the cinnamon rolls rest, bake them for about 20-25 minutes until they're golden brown.

    Step 5: Finishing Up

When they're almost done baking, mix the powdered sugar and Creme Fraiche or thickened cream in a bowl.

Then coat the hot cinnamon rolls with the glaze and set them aside to cool for a minute.

If you want, coat the cinnamon rolls with more glaze before serving then dig in!

    Storing Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls

These tasty treats are irresistible when they come hot out of the oven. And if anyone is home while they're baking, the sweet cinnamon smell will have them lining up in the kitchen waiting for them to be done. So, you might not have any left!

But, if you do, you can store the cinnamon rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days and in the fridge for up to a week!

Then, whenever you want to indulge in one for breakfast or dessert, just pop it in the microwave for a few seconds until warm.

    Freezing cinnamon rolls

If you want to freeze the cinnamon rolls, allow them to cool completely after baking and then wrap each one in plastic wrap.

Then, transfer the cinnamon rolls to a freezer-safe bag, and they'll last in the freezer for about 2 months. And to reheat them, just put the amount of cinnamon rolls you want on the counter for around  30-60 minutes - or in the fridge overnight to thaw.

And to heat them up, just pop the cinnamon rolls in the microwave for a few seconds until warm.
