The Best Sautéed Brussels Sprouts
Sautéed brussels sprouts are one of the best - not to mention the most addictive - healthy side dishes you can make. I mean, they're absolutely chock-full of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. And, when cooked right, they are about as yummy as a green veggie gets.
And while I love these air fryer brussels sprouts, nothing beats this sautéed brussels sprouts recipe when it comes to speed. Believe it or not, these flavorful sautéed brussels sprouts are ready in literally less than 10 minutes! And the cooking process is simple too - you basically just add the ingredients to a skillet and let them cook properly, that's it.
Honestly, I get requests to make these delicious sautéed brussels sprouts for dinner all the time - my wife is an especially big fan of them. The sautéed brussels sprouts go exceptionally well with this easy pork loin recipe, and these roasted chicken thighs!
Ingredients
So, you only need 5 main ingredients - plus a little salt and pepper - to make this healthy brussel sprout recipe. In fact, if you have the brussels sprouts, you probably have everything else you need on hand too.
Here are all the ingredients you'll need to make these sautéed brussels sprouts:
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1lb. Brussels sprouts (halved if large), trimmed
- 2 cloves garlic, sliced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoon blanched hazelnuts, chopped
Simple stuff, right?
Now, I like to use hazelnuts in this recipe to add a bit of texture to the sprouts, but really any kind of nuts will work well to add an extra crunch to 'em. Also, if you want to elevate the flavor a little more, you can sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top after cooking.
By the way, if you have these ingredients, then all you need is some kale, and then you can make these air fryer kale chips - it's another one of my favorite healthy sides.
How to Cook Sautéed Brussel Sprouts
Again, these sauteed brussels sprouts are super quick and easy to make.
As I mentioned, you just have to sautée the brussels sprouts, and then add the rest of the ingredients to the skillet. Then, everything just gets cooked briefly together. That's really all there is to it.
With that said, let's not waste any more time and jump right into the steps for this sautéed brussel sprouts recipe.
Step 1: Saute The Brussel sprouts
First, you'll want to add the olive oil to a cast iron skillet - or any heavy-bottomed skillet - and put it over medium-high heat on the stove.
Then, once the oil is hot enough, move the oil around the large skillet to coat the entire bottom surface with it and add the brussels sprouts to it. Saute the brussel sprouts for 6-7 minutes untouched. And leaving them untouched is key to getting those crispy charred edges that make these sautéed sprouts so good - so don't overlook this step.
Step 2: Seasoning the Brussel sprouts
Once you've sautéed the brussel sprouts, you can add the garlic to the skillet and toss it with the brussels sprouts for about 30 seconds or until the garlic is fragrant.
Next, you'll want to sprinkle the brussels sprouts with a little lemon juice and add the chopped hazelnuts as well. Now you can give everything a mix and then take the skillet off the heat with the cooked brussels sprouts still inside. The residual heat from the pan will continue to cook the chopped hazelnuts and bring out their rich, nutty flavor.
Lastly, season your sauteed brussels sprouts with a little salt and pepper to taste - and some parmesan cheese if you prefer it - and serve all the sprouts immediately. Enjoy!
How to Store Leftover Brussel Sprouts
This recipe for sautéed brussel sprouts makes enough for 4 servings as a side dish. So if you think you'll need more, you can easily just double or triple the number of ingredients.
Then, if you happen to have any leftovers of this sauteed brussels sprout recipe, you can keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for about 2-3 days in the refrigerator.
Alternatively, you can freeze these healthy brussels sprouts in a freezer bag with the extra air squeezed out for up to 3 months.
How to Reheat Cooked Brussel Sprouts
These sauteed brussels sprouts are best enjoyed hot. So, if you want to reheat your leftovers of 'em, you can just toss your brussel sprouts back in a skillet with a little oil and warm over medium heat for a few minutes. Just make sure to give them a stir frequently so they don't burn.
Alternatively, if you want to heat your leftover brussel sprouts up even quicker you can use a microwave. Just microwave them in 30-second intervals until they're warm. This shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes.
FAQs About This Sauteed Brussel Sprouts Recipe
Should you blanch brussel sprouts before sauteing?
Blanching brussels sprouts before sauteing is a good way to ensure larger sprouts cook all the way through. With that said though, if you're sauteing smaller sprouts - or large sprouts - that have been chopped in half lengthwise, you can skip blanching them and still achieve some tender, beautifully cooked brussels sprouts.
Do you need to soak brussel sprouts before cooking?
Soaking brussels sprouts in salt water is a good way to draw out some of the bitterness in the vegetable if you're planning on boiling or steaming them. However, for high-heat recipes like broiled or sauteed brussels sprouts, you can skip soaking because the dry heat brings out enough of the brussel sprouts natural sweetness to mask the bitter taste.
How do you make brussel sprouts less bitter?
Using smaller brussels sprouts, removing the tough outer leaves on big brussels sprouts, or using high heat cooking methods like sauteing, air frying, and roasting are all great ways to reduce - or eliminate - the bitterness of brussels sprouts. Boiling and steaming brussels sprouts generally result in the most bitter-tasting sprouts, so you might want to avoid these cooking methods if you're not a fan of their bitterness.
