Ingredient Substitutions and Suggestions
Now, I think these cabbage steaks taste best when made with the ingredients listed above, but that's because I don't think you need a ton of add-ons to make the flavor of roasted cabbage shine.
That being said, there's definitely room to switch things up to suit your tastes.
For instance, you can add a sprinkle of grated parmesan cheese, onion powder, minced fresh garlic, Italian seasoning, or even add some fresh herbs and butter for a different flavor profile. In fact, if you add some crunchy chopped pecans, they'll taste a bit like my sauteed brussels sprouts recipe.
As for the cabbage steaks, I typically use green cabbage, but you can also make savoy cabbage, napa cabbage, or red cabbage steaks the exact same way with some minor adjustments to the cooking time.
How To Make Cabbage Steaks
Again, making these cabbage steaks couldn't be any easier. In fact, you only need 5 minutes of prep, and the rest of the magic happens in the oven.
So, let's stop wasting and get cooking!
Step 1: Cut The Cabbage Steaks
First things first, you'll want to preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Then, after you've done that you'll want to line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside for later. Once you've taken care of that you'll want to clean the head of the cabbage. To do this you'll want to start by discarding the outer leaves of the head and then you'll want to cut the stem at the base.
Next, you can cut the cabbage crosswise down the center, cut each cabbage piece in half, and then cut off the rounded end pieces. By the way, you'll want to make sure your pieces are about 1 inch thick.
Anyway, now you can remove the tough core of each cabbage steak by cutting a small triangle out at the center. Just make sure not to cut out the whole thing since your cabbage steaks will fall apart.
Step 2: Season The Cabbage Steaks
Next, you can go ahead and place the cabbage steaks on the prepared baking sheet and brush them with olive oil on all sides. Then, you can follow that up by seasoning both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Step 3: Roast and Serve
Once your cabbage steaks are nicely seasoned, you can slide the baking sheet into the oven and roast the cabbage for 25 minutes or until the center of the cabbage steak is soft enough to pierce with a fork.
Finally, serve your roasted cabbage steaks warm and enjoy 'em!
How To Store Cabbage Steaks
This recipe for baked cabbage steaks makes enough for 2 servings, so it's great to have as a dinner for two or for leftovers the next day.
Speaking of leftovers, you can store any extra roasted cabbage steaks in an airtight container for 3-5 days in the fridge. Or, if you want to keep the cabbage for longer, you can store it in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.
How To Reheat Cabbage Steaks
When you're ready to enjoy your baked cabbage steaks again, you'll want to reheat them first.
So, to do that, place your cabbage steaks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake them in the oven at 350°F (175°C). Then, cook 'em for around 4 minutes or until the cabbage is warmed through.
