With that said, if you've been looking to step those two things up a notch, this southern deviled eggs recipe is for you! Wonderfully creamy, slightly tangy, and packed with flavor - these deviled eggs have it all.
Now, I know, deviled eggs can sometimes be intimidating to make, but these classic southern deviled eggs are a breeze. Seriously, even if you've never made deviled eggs - or even hard boiled eggs - before, these will turn out as if a pro chef made them!
And what's awesome about them is their versatility. You can serve these southern deviled eggs at your next brunch - or dinner party - to wow your guests. They make for both an elevated appetizer, and a tasty side option with dinner as well.
Of course, every great side dish needs an equally great main. So, if you're looking for something to pair these with try serving them next to this breakfast casserole, these bagels, these waffles, or this quiche.
With all that said, let's dive into the list of ingredients you need to make southern deviled eggs.
Ingredients
This recipe for classic southern deviled eggs actually requires super simple, common ingredients. In fact, you probably have most - if not all - of them on hand already!
Anyway, here's what you'll need to make these southern deviled eggs:
- 6 large eggs, cold
- 4 cups cold water
- 3 tablespoon mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoon sweet relish
- 1 tablespoon sour cream
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Smoked paprika, for garnish
See, pretty simple stuff for a recipe that packs a whole lot of flavor, right?!
Now, if you don't have everything on this list, I highly recommend picking whatever you don't have on hand at the store. All of these ingredients - used in these ratios - really combine to make some out-of-this-world southern deviled eggs.
By the way, for the sweet relish, you can also use just regular pickle relish if that's all you can find.
Oh, and if you're grabbing eggs, you'll want to stock up so you can make my 0 carb breakfast tacos or egg bites next!
How To make southern deviled eggs
As I mentioned, this southern deviled eggs recipe could not be any easier to make.
All you really have to do is make hard boiled eggs and then do a little mixing.
Seriously, it's that easy.
Anyway, let's stop wasting time and get into the steps you'll want to follow to make this classic southern deviled eggs recipe!
Step 1: Make The Hard Boiled Eggs
First, place the eggs in the bottom of a large pot and cover them fully with cold water. Then, bring water to a boil over high heat for 3 minutes.
After that, turn off the heat, cover the pot, and let the eggs sit for 15 minutes.
Step 2: Prepare The Eggs
Next, drain the water from the pot and transfer the eggs to a bowl of cold water. Let the eggs sit in the cold water until they're cool enough to handle.
Once cooled, peel each egg, cut them in half, and then separate the egg whites from the egg yolks. Then, after you've done that, you'll want to arrange all of the egg whites on a serving plate.
Step 3: Make The Deviled Eggs Filling
Now transfer the egg yolks from the eggs to a bowl and mash the yolk mixture with a fork.
Then, stir in the mayonnaise, sweet relish, mustard, and sour cream, and mix well until everything combines.
Give this yolk mixture a little taste and season with extra salt and pepper as needed.
Step 4: Fill The Egg Whites
Next, transfer your yolk mixture into a piping bag fitted with a large open star tip. If you don't have a piping bag, you can use a ziploc bag with the corner cut. Alternatively, you can just use a spoon to add the mixture.
Now, fill the egg whites evenly with the filling mixture and garnish the tops of each one with smoked paprika.
Finally, serve these classic southern deviled eggs immediately or chill them in the refrigerator and serve 'em later.
And, of course, as always, enjoy!
How To Store Southern Deviled Eggs
Something I love about this southern deviled eggs recipe is that you can make it in advance and chill it in the fridge before serving.
So this recipe comes in the clutch if you have other recipes you have to prepare, or you know you won't have a lot of time during the day.
You can store the prepared - or leftover - deviled eggs in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days after making them. Then, whenever you're ready to serve 'em, just take them out of the fridge and dig in!
